Why the Name: The Rock?

There are numerous descriptions of God as a rock and refuge in the Bible. Isaiah 44:8, Isaiah 26:4, Psalm 61:1-3, 2 Samuel 22:1-3

There are Old Testament prophecies of Jesus being the chief Cornerstone fulfilled in the New Testament which can either act as a foundation or a stumbling block depending on how we individually react to Jesus - Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 28:16, Ephesians 2:19-20, Mark 12:10-11

In Matthew 16:13-18, Jesus has an interesting conversation with Peter using a simple play on the Greek words Petra (bedrock) & Petros (small detached stones) to describe the relationship between Christ & the church.  Peter later gives a fuller explanation of how believers are “living stones” in the church which is built upon the foundation and cornerstone, Jesus Christ - 1 Peter 2:5,6.

In the book of Luke 6:46-49, Jesus shares the parable of the wise & foolish builders describing the comparison of building on a foundation of rock instead of sand; affirming the preferred choice of building upon the eternally solid foundation of Jesus Christ.

The numerous Scriptural references to the wisdom of seeking Christ as our foundation and Cornerstone led the leadership and congregation to choose The Rock to be the name of the new community church starting in Carstairs in April 2022.
